Why holiday in Andalucia?

Andalucia is undoubtedly one of the world’s most desirable holiday destinations. Andalucia’s unique mix of the exotic and the accessible continues to draw travellers in ever increasing numbers. There can be few places where visits to magnificent Moorish palaces or Renaissance churches can be combined with stays in family-friendly resorts with endless beaches and activities for all ages. The famously benign year-round climate of Andalucia is perhaps the icing on the cake!

Ubeda, AndaluciaAndalucia’s cultural attractions are well-known. The Alhambra Palace in Granada, home of the last Islamic rulers of Andalucia, would be reason enough to visit, but there is so much else to see. Seville is an atmospheric and vibrant city, known for its Giralda and Alcazar and its beautiful parks and gardens, not to mention its outstanding gastronomy. Cordoba’s Mezquita (Great Mosque) is a unique European example of such a building, and Cordoba’s flower-decked patios, Roman history and the narrow whitewashed alleys of the Juderia only add to its appeal. Apart from the ‘big three’ cities there are many other unforgettable towns – Ronda, Antequera, Baeza and Ubeda are but a few of the other treasures waiting to be explored.

Fish in a Malaga marketIn addition, Andalucia is a wonderful destination for food lovers. Andalucian food is the Mediterranean diet par excellence, with outstandingly fresh produce that is as delicious as it is good for you! Stroll through the covered markets and admire the array of fresh vegetables, ripened under the Spanish sun rather than on the supermarket shelf. Dine at a beach restaurant on delicious fish and seafood that only a couple of hours ago were still swimming in the sea! Pass a few happy hours in a traditional bar sampling some of the finest cured hams that you will ever eat, accompanied by bread dipped in the finest virgin olive oil from local olive groves, and a glass of the exquisite dry Manzanilla sherry from Sanlucar.

Seville, the gardens of the AlcazarBut Andalucia’s main appeal lies in the fact that here there is something for all the family. Historic cities, days on the beach, elegant shopping and walks in beautiful countryside can all be part of your Andalucian holiday. In addition, Andalucia’s main airports such as Malaga, Granada and Seville are well served by low-cost airlines. Flight times from the UK are short, but for those who wish to take their own car, the journey through France and Spain can be part of the holiday itself, if stopover hotels are carefully chosen! US visitors, who often arrive at Madrid, should consider the historic Parador  hotels for an enjoyable stopover on their journey down to Andalucia.

Having set your heart on Andalucia, the only problem is in deciding where to stay. In recent years there has been a huge growth in independently-booked holidays. Travellers are able to book their own hotel and flights separately, often with huge cost advantages! If you are booking a hotel, special internet booking rates are often much cheaper than the standard nightly rate! Families should note that hotels in Spain are so much more welcoming to children than those in the UK! Children are not expected to have tea early on and then left with a babysitter while the parents eat on their own. Instead they are welcome in even the smartest hotel restaurant and are expected to eat with their parents, however late the hour (make sure they have a siesta in the afternoon!). Spanish children often wander around restaurants while being smiled at by the other diners.

Selection of tapas in an Andalucian village barFor many people, however, the ideal Andalucian holiday will be spent in a country villa with private pool. The main appeal of self-catering accommodation (apart from the pool!) is the flexibility to eat at times of your own choosing and to prepare your own meals, a particular advantage for those with young children. In addition, staying near a rural village is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the Andalucian lifestyle. You can buy  wonderful fresh produce in local markets to prepare in your villa. Evenings can be spent having a barbecue by your pool or trying out the traditional bars in your local village!

Wherever you decide to stay, you can be sure that Andalucia will leave a permanent imprint on your memory. There can be few things better than relaxing in the shade at a wonderful beach restaurant such as the famous El Tintero, your table spread with plates of grilled prawns, freshly cooked sole, roast pepper salad, and crisply fried small fish, while your children play on the sand next to you and the waiters wander past with yet more delicacies to choose from. A truly addictive lifestyle! It is no surprise that so many people have decided to make this very special part of Europe their permanent home, nor that many people return year after year to immerse themselves once again in the magic of Andalucia.
