 The Local Area

Humilladero seen from the Sierrecilla "little mountain"Casa La Sierrecilla  is just outside the village of Humilladero, a typical whitewashed Andalucian village surrounded by olive groves.  It has many traditional bars and restaurants, most with seats outside in the summer. This thriving agricultural village is a lively and friendly community where our guests have always felt very welcome. On warm summer evenings the village centre has a wonderful atmosphere as young and old alike enjoy themselves sampling tapas, paella, crisply fried fresh fish or delicious grilled prawns. Children, who are always welcome anywhere in Spain, play in the streets until well after midnight !  You can buy most everyday requirements in Humilladero - it has several small supermarkets and a variety of other shops. There is also a covered market where fresh fish and meat can be bought by those who wish to try their hand at some Andalucian cooking. Guests have also found our article on eating and drinking in Andalucia essential reading in preparation for their holiday!

Make sure you explore the beautiful countryside around Humilladero. The thousands of olive trees testify to the main crop in this area and visitors will also notice the many vines that are grown for the delicious white wine of the neighbouring village of Mollina. The Sierrecilla ("little mountain") that rises up next to the village (and gives our house its name!) contains a barbecue area where families enjoy themselves and children play. Only five minutes' drive is the lovely village of Fuente de Piedra with its pretty square, pavement cafés and famous Flamingo Lake.

Humilladero also lies on the Route of Washington Irving.  This famous American writer was the author of "Tales of the Alhambra", the book inspired by his journey through Andalucia from Seville to Granada in 1829 and his stay in the now  world-famous Moorish palace of the Alhambra. Information about the route can be obtained locally and following it is a fascinating way to discover Andalucia.

Gardens of the Alcazar, Cordoba   For many of our guests a visit to the Alhambra is a integral part of their holiday in Andalucia and we would remind you that to avoid disappointment you should book your tickets in advance (we can provide information on how to do this). In addition, the beautiful city of Cordoba, capital of medieval Al-Andalus, is only 30 minutes away by train. A visit to Cordoba's magnificent Mezquita is sure to be an unforgettable part of your holiday in Andalucia. See our sightseeing page for many other exciting options for days out!
